Glimpse just published a large open-access dataset of battery CT scans! The publication is entitled “A Dataset of Over One Thousand Computed Tomography Scans of Battery Cells” and was published in Data in Brief. You can read the paper here and explore the scans on the Glimpse Portal here.

Representative CT cross-sections from the dataset for a cylindrical cell. Explore the full dataset on the Glimpse Portal in “Demo Mode”.
The dataset contains 1,015 CT scans of commercially available, as-produced battery cells spanning multiple chemistries and form factors: 500 standard 21700 cylindrical cells, 400 standard 18650 cylindrical cells, 50 sodium-ion 18650 cells, 25 high-energy-density 21700 cells, 25 4680 cells, 10 pouch cells, and 5 prismatic cells. Each scan was processed into a standardized set of cross-sectional images capturing the major axes of the cell.
The motivation for releasing this dataset is straightforward: CT scanning is one of the most powerful tools available for battery quality control, but the field has lacked large, publicly available reference datasets. While many open battery cycling datasets have publicly released, open datasets of other cell characterization techniques have remained almost nonexistent. Our CT dataset is intended to support researchers working on batteries, computer vision, or both.
CT scanning at this scale is precisely what Glimpse’s solutions were built to enable. Contact us to leverage high-throughput CT scanning for your own cell characterization and quality control needs.
